Alarming rise in homelessness highlighted in Fraser Valley Regional District point-in-time survey

CHILLIWACK — The latest Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) Homeless Point-in-Time (PiT) and Survey report paints a concerning picture of homelessness in the Regional District. Conducted over a 24-hour period on March 7-8, 2023, the report underscores a troubling trend of escalating homelessness, with a 22 per cent increase since the last count in 2020.

FVRD Chair Jason Lum expressed concern over the findings, highlighting a consistent rise in homelessness since 2014. “Despite significant efforts by local government and our partners, these numbers continue to trend in the wrong direction,” Lum said, emphasizing the pressing need for additional government support in housing and health.

The report reveals a total of 1,094 individuals experiencing homelessness in the FVRD, a stark increase, with the most significant spikes seen in Chilliwack (25 per cent) and the Eastern Fraser Valley (28 per cent). The available shelter beds in the region (602) could only accommodate 55 per cent of those found without homes during the PiT Count.

The homeless population is diverse, encompassing people of all ages. However, the report notes a concerning rise in individuals over the age of sixty. Indigenous people and those who were in government care as children or youth continue to be disproportionately affected, constituting 38 per cent and 31 per cent of survey respondents, respectively.

Survey results unveiled heightened rates of physical and mental health issues, including addiction, contributing to housing loss for many. Health problems ranked as the primary cause of homelessness, followed closely by housing and financial issues. The report underscores the urgent need for comprehensive support systems to address the complex factors leading to homelessness.

Transportation issues emerged as a significant barrier to accessing services, while the lack of affordable housing, insufficient income, and societal stigma were identified as primary obstacles to securing stable housing.
