CHILLIWACK — Environment Canada has issued highway weather alerts for a pair of well-travelled highways east of Chilliwack and the Fraser Valley.

Environment Canada released snowfall warnings Friday (Dec. 1) for the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt and for Highway 3 from Hope to Princeton. It says drivers should expect to encounter flurries beginning Friday evening and intensifying through the night, at times falling heavily overnight. It expects the snowfall to gradually ease to flurries by midday Saturday.

According to Environment Canada, a frontal system is moving onshore Friday night and will move across the interior Saturday. It says rapidly accumulating snow will make travel difficult.

It advises drivers to be prepared to adjust their driving habits to meet changing road conditions. Winter tires are required to travel along the two highways under British Columbia law.
