VANCOUVER — As Black Friday looms larger on the calendar each year, retailers across the B.C. are rolling out their Black Friday prices, enticing shoppers to open their wallets sooner rather than later. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) serving Mainland BC & Yukon, wants to help consumers get the most value for their holiday spending.

A recent report from the Retail Council of Canada (RCC) reveals that British Columbians are expected to spend an average of $860 on holiday purchases this year. Economic concerns, such as inflation and rising living costs, have driven 88% of Canadians to adopt proactive shopping strategies. This includes seeking sales (52%), planning ahead (41%), and adhering to a specific budget (40%).

“With Black Friday and Cyber Monday around the corner and inflation impacting our budgets, it’s crucial to be savvy with our shopping,” emphasizes Aaron Guillen, Marketing and Communications Specialist at BBB. “A few strategic moves can protect your wallet and ensure joy for your loved ones this holiday season.”

BBB is offering shopping tips to consumers looking to make purchases for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The first is to shop with trustworthy businesses. Research before you buy. Utilize BBB.org to identify businesses with BBB signs to be assured of avoiding scams and unprofessional vendors.

It also advises consumers to be aware that return policies can shift during sales events. Read the fine print, especially for items labeled “final sale” or “closeout.” Get a gift receipt for presents, and be cautious of inflated original prices.

Compare prices from various retailers to secure the best deal. Some stores offer price matching, so familiarize yourself with the average market price for items on your shopping list.

Be vigilant for deals that seem too good to be true. Check the legitimacy of websites and beware of scammers creating lookalike sites. Verify business names, contact information, and customer service details.

And when shopping online, opt for credit cards for added protection. Dispute charges with your credit card company if issues arise. Avoid prepaid debit cards, e-transfers, or wiring money to online sellers.
