Chilliwack Rotary recognizes Leaders of Tomorrow from G.W. Graham

CHILLIWACK – Eight exemplary students from G.W. Graham secondary embodied what it meant to pursue excellence in and out of the classroom this past school year.

Chilliwack Rotary released its list of Leaders of Tomorrow program honorees, awarding bursaries to outstanding students Sarah Christie, Madison Bassani, Chase Hall, Jasmine Padgham, twin brothers Colby Fleming and Clayton Fleming, Jordan Richards, and Jared Hall.

The modern languages department of G.W. Graham recognized Christie for her 96 per cent final score in French 12, and commended her for a myriad of extracurricular activities including teaching at Project Dance, volunteering in both peer tutoring and the school social justice course, teaching Sunday school at her church, volunteering for the Rotary book sale and tutoring math.

Madison Bassani earned accolades from the fine arts department for being involved in music, drama and visual arts during her time at G.W. Graham. In particular, she played a big part in the Graham live streaming team, wrote for the student newspaper, and comprised a key part of vocal jazz and orchestra. Bassani plans to attend Emily Carr University.

The English department nominated Chase Hall for the Leader of Tomorrow program by virtue of his exceptional academic performance. He earned 100 percent marks in advanced placement literature and straight-As in every Grade 12 course. Outside of school, Hall, who has seven brothers, was active in the Chilliwack School of Performing Arts, his church and his family, and plans to pursue a history degree followed by law school aspirations.

Jasmine Padgham received mathematics department recognition for her high academic marks and her extensive involvement as an executive member of student council, director of the Kiwanis Key Club, volunteering at the Rotary book sale and Salvation Army, and helping out with multiple food drives.

The applied skills and design department within the trades division at G.W. Graham recognized twin brothers Colby and Clayton Fleming. Staff described the brothers as being helpful to teachers and peers around them and adroit at demonstrating a strong work ethic, coupled with a willingness to take risks with project design. Rounding out their skill sets were their professional looking computer-aided design drawings and thoughtful ability to incorporate past tech experiences into new projects.

The social studies department recognized Jordan Richards for his quiet leadership that he demonstrated through strong advocacy skills for all and a passion for social justice. Richards was credited by staff for his dependable, reliable leadership role in any area and accomplishing tasks with ease and maturity, especially in understanding all sides of a difficult dispute and working hard to reach a resolution.

Jared Hall was an integral member of the development of the G.W. Graham boys basketball program over the past five seasons, culminating with his selection as one of the team’s starting guards and being a co-captain of the squad entering his senior year. Hall devoted extra time in the gym and demonstrated leadership in team discussions and meetings. Despite carrying a heavy academic course load, Hall persevered to become a straight-A honours student and earned final marks above 90 per cent. Throughout his time at Graham, Hall received awards for citizenship, inspiration, academics, athletics, and effort.
