CHILLIWACK – On the eve of Canada Day and with nearly perfect summer weather forecast for the start of the long weekend, Chilliwack RCMP are urging people to remain vigilant if they head up Chilliwack Lake Road to two popular recreation spots.

The Chilliwack RCMP are asking the public to report suspicious activity following a series of catalytic converter thefts in the Lindeman Lake and Chilliwack Lake areas in recent weeks.

“Thieves are targeting unoccupied vehicles at these locations,” said Sgt. Krista Vrolyk, Chilliwack RCMP media spokesperson. “The thefts are occurring both during the day and overnight. Chilliwack RCMP are asking the public to be aware and report any suspicious activity – particularly in and around Chilliwack Lake and Lindeman Lake recreation areas.”

These catalytic converter thefts are under investigation by the Chilliwack RCMP property crime division.

To help prevent catalytic converter theft, Chilliwack RCMP urge people to park whenever possible in a secure garage or compound, park so it is difficult to gain access under your car, and install a product intended to deter catalytic converter theft such as protective cages, alarms and straps.

Catalytic converter thefts often involve a loud noise like grinding or sawing noises from under a parked vehicle, or seeing suspicious activity near parked vehicles.

Chilliwack residents are urged to contact the Chilliwack RCMP property crime division at 604-792-4611, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) if you wish to remain anonymous.
