YOUR PERSPECTIVE: Supporting communities with growth

Sep 21, 2023 | 8:00 AM

This past week I was joined by colleagues as we met with local organizations, business owners and people across Langley and Cloverdale to hear about the incredible work they do, and the challenges they face. It was great to be able to show my colleagues the amazing work being done here and what a great place the growing community of Langley is to live.

In my community of Langley, like in many other growing communities across the province, one thing that’s always clear when we’re out talking to people is that affordable housing is on their minds.

That’s why this week our government announced that we’re making it easier for people to build suites on their property, and that we’re streamlining the process for provincial approvals on new homes.

We know that people in British Columbia need housing now, and that’s why we’re making it easier for people who are looking to construct homes or apartment buildings to get the multiple different permits they need to begin building. By launching the Single Housing Application Service, we’re streamlining a process that used to require separate applications for every government ministry involved. This one-stop shop will help speed up approvals by months for rental buildings and new homes meaning people can get into the homes they deserve faster.

In 2020, our government approved the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain, which will bring rapid transit south of the Fraser while also providing an opportunity for transit-oriented development. The new Single Housing Application Service means that permits to build housing close to SkyTrain stops can be approved more quickly so that people can find great homes in or near communities like Langley.

Not only will the Single Housing Application Service help drive forward permit approvals, but it will also connect experts and homebuilders so that homebuilders have a guide through the application process.

We know that a big challenge people are facing right now is finding affordable rentals, and that those with the space or desire to create secondary suites in their home might face financial burdens or not be permitted to build a secondary or basement suite. That’s why in addition to bringing forth legislation this fall that will make secondary suites legal in all communities across the province, we want to give homeowners a forgivable loan to help reimburse the cost of creating affordable rental suites.

This pilot program will help up to 3,000 applicants with access to a five-year loan that will be forgivable on renovations up to 50 per cent should they build a secondary or basement suite and meet certain requirements such as being able to rent out the new suite at or below market rates.

To help homeowners who want to create affordable rentals for their community, we’ve also launched an online guide called Home Suite Home, which will help people, whether they are a part of this pilot incentive program or not, access the information they need to manage and build a suite on their property.

These are only a few of the steps we’re taking to tackle rental shortages and to make sure that people can afford to live in the communities they love, like Langley.

Our government will continue to do all we can to combat the housing crisis and make sure British Columbians have access to the homes that they deserve.
