Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. named American League player of the week

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was named American League player of the week on Tuesday after hitting .407 with three home runs and seven RBIs over seven games.

The 23-year-old slugger scored seven runs over the stretch and had 11 hits with an on-base percentage of .500. It’s the fourth time in Guerrero’s career that he has taken the honour.

First baseman Paul Goldschmidt of the St. Louis Cardinals took the nod in the National League. He batted .467 with four homers over seven games last week.

Guerrero also leads all AL first basemen in voting for the July 19 all-star game in Los Angeles. He had 947,045 votes in Major League Baseball’s ballot update Tuesday, leaving him with a comfortable lead on Seattle’s Ty France (596,030).

Guerrero was one of three Blue Jays to lead their respective positions in the voting.

Catcher Alejandro Kirk (1,057,008) was well in front of Jose Trevino (387,983) of the New York Yankees and shortstop Bo Bichette (585,744) was ahead of Tim Anderson (528,278) of the Chicago White Sox. 

Toronto’s George Springer (622,063) was third in the AL outfielder vote behind Yankees slugger Aaron Judge (1,512,368) and Mike Trout (1,295,854) of the Los Angeles Angels. 

Toronto’s Santiago Espinal (522,154) was second among second basemen behind Houston’s Jose Altuve (710,708).

MLB’s next balloting update is scheduled for Monday. The all-star starters will be revealed July 8.
