CHILLIWACK — Ruth and Naomi’s humble beginnings originated when founders Ted and Ann Stoker served sandwiches out of the back of their vehicle in 1995.

Twenty-eight years later, the registered Canadian charity based in Chilliwack has grown to meet the physical, social and spiritual needs of a growing community by serving up to 380 meals a day, supporting men and women in a residential addiction recovery setting, and sustaining low-income families with access to safe, affordable housing alongside security and supports.

In this setting where tangible and spiritual needs are met, Ruth and Naomi’s plans to open its doors on Easter Sunday to anyone in the community that needs a warm, nourishing meal for free.

Ruth and Naomi’s wrote on Facebook this week that it will be offering turkey and all the fixings of an Easter meal on Sunday, April 9 at 6 p.m. in the Community Outreach Building at 46130 Margaret Avenue.

“Help us provide comfort and a good meal at Easter!” Ruth and Naomi’s wrote on Facebook. “This dinner is open to everyone who might need a warm and nourishing meal. We’ll be serving turkey with all the fixin’s and have some special guests coming to help serve.”

Ruth and Naomi’s invites the community to not only enjoy the meal, but to also support the meal with any kind of funds.

Throughout its history, Ruth and Naomi’s has gradually grown to meet the needs of underserved, marginalized individuals right here in town. In 2011, the first of its three locations was constructed, including the Community Outreach Centre, both Pathways and Revive shelters, and its Community Dining Hall.

In 2018 the Family Centre was constructed, which includes apartments, the New Hope Medical Clinic, Kids Club daycare centre, OASIS women’s recovery program, and administrative offices.

Its third location is the Interchange, home of the former Travelodge and IHOP restaurant, which houses its Oasis men’s recovery program and 54 supportive housing rooms.

Ruth and Naomi’s now aims to fill a void in the community by pursuing a dental clinic and community outreach program that will reach deeper into the Chilliwack community to assist people who are experiencing homelessness.

To that end, it will hold its Night of Hope fundraising gala on Friday, May 5 featuring a silent auction, comedian Cliff Prang as gala host, and a catered meal.

“Come and hear real stories of transformation, and help us raise funds for a desperately needed Dental Clinic in our RAN Family Centre,” Ruth and Naomi’s wrote on Facebook. “The clinic will reach out beyond our walls and into the community where dental services are unavailable or unattainable for many in our community.

The non-profit organization currently employs about 90 staff between each of its locations and is currently hiring.
