YOUR PERSPECTIVE: Protecting farms from animal disease

Mar 23, 2023 | 8:00 AM

Farmers, ranchers and producers in British Columbia play a huge role in our economy and provide people across our province with nutritious and delicious fresh food.

Protecting B.C. farms from potential threats, and preserving our food security, is top of mind for our government. That’s why I was in Chilliwack last week to announce $5 million in new investments to help protect B.C. farms from animal diseases such as avian influenza, swine fever, and foot and mouth disease.

Animal diseases can disrupt livestock production and make it harder for people to get the food they depend on at a reasonable price.

This new funding will help support B.C. farmers and ranchers to plan and respond more quickly and effectively to disease outbreaks, as well as helping to prevent outbreaks from occurring.

We’re also providing farmers with the training and equipment they need to respond to outbreaks, and we will continue working closely with B.C. farmers and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency on enhanced prevention and preparedness measures to protect livestock and poultry flocks.

It is important that B.C. has a resilient food supply that can withstand challenges such as animal disease. This funding will also support business planning so that farmers can react promptly and resume normal operations quickly after an outbreak. Resiliency also requires preparing for the unknown, and that’s why we are investing in research so we can predict and respond to future animal disease threats.

Protecting our farmers’ ability to produce food is important to all of us in British Columbia. To have a strong and resilient economy we need a strong and resilient farming sector. Farmers and producers need to know that the B.C. government has their back, especially in the face of challenges. By working together, we can ensure a stronger farming sector that protects food security for all British Columbians.
