CHILLIWACK — Stealing items from residential neighbourhoods in an era of seemingly ubiquitous security cameras is already risky business.

But the job got a lot harder for a burly man who decided to get the job done Saturday morning (Mar. 18) without any clothes on except for socks, triggering several calls to the Chilliwack RCMP detachment.

Chilliwack RCMP Sgt. Krista Vrolyk said Mounties in Chilliwack received multiple reports of a suspicious male in the area of Chilliwack Central Road and Young Road in which the alleged male was described as being naked or “mostly undressed.”

Police had received information received from one witness that a male matching this description had allegedly broken into a detached shop and trailer and stolen some items.

A surveillance camera image posted on social media from one Chilliwack resident shows a nearly naked man in a backyard at 7:21 a.m. Saturday morning in broad daylight.

Sgt. Vrolyk said Chilliwack RCMP conducted patrols and subsequently located and arrested a 38-year-old man. The man was found to be in breach of his conditions and later determined to be subject of a Canada-wide warrant. He remains in custody, Sgt. Vrolyk said.

According to one Chilliwack resident who posted information about the incident on social media, the unclothed man broke into a shop and camping trailer at 7:22 a.m. Saturday, stealing a snow suit, snow boots, a 3M fall protection harness, Milwaukee gloves and a Milwaukee hammer. He allegedly trashed the camping trailer and activated the fire extinguisher inside it.

It should be noted the man left the residence and apparently wore the snow suit that he stole, according to the Chilliwack resident who posted details about the nearly naked vandal.

Investigation into the reported break and enter continues. Anyone with any information regarding this incident, is asked to contact the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611 under file 2023-10254.
