BURNABY – Homicide investigators in B.C. say a 27-year-old man has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder and a single count of indignity to human remains in the homicides of two people whose bodies were discovered four years ago.

IHIT Sgt. Freda Fong says police in Burnaby located the bodies of 31-year-old Kiesha Garie and 30-year-old Umair Kasim on Oct. 17, 2022, inside a car in the 900 block of Alpha Avenue in Burnaby.

IHIT was deployed and worked closely with Burnaby RCMP, Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS) personnel, and the BC Coroners Service to advance the investigation.

Earlier today, IHIT arrested 27-year-old Mohammed Arif Ansari in connection with the homicides of Garie and Kasim. She says the BC Prosecution Service approved two counts of second-degree murder and one count of indignity to human remains against Ansari.

Sgt. Fong says investigators suspect the homicides were targeted and that the parties involved were known to one another.

“This was a complex investigation that demanded years of dedicated work by investigators who were committed to finding answers,” says Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT.

“Through the persistent pursuit of multiple investigative avenues and the meticulous examination of evidence, this case has reached a significant milestone with the approval of charges. We recognize the profound impact these homicides have had on the victims’ families and our thoughts remain with them as the judicial process moves forward.”

IHIT had no further comment since the matter is now before the courts.
