BURNABY – Authorities have now confirmed that a 33-year-old woman died following a structure fire in Burnaby last week.

According to a statement from Burnaby RCMP spokesperson Corporal Mike Kalanj, Burnaby RCMP officers responded to a residential structure fire on Douglas Road near Norfolk Street just after 4:30 a.m. on Friday, October 9.

Frontline officers attended, along with Burnaby Fire Department crews and B.C. Emergency Health Services personnel.

Despite life-saving efforts at the scene, one person did not survive. Another person was transported to hospital for medical treatment. Part of Douglas Road was closed for several hours to accommodate emergency response efforts, Cpl. Kalanj said.

The cause of the fire is still unknown at this point. Burnaby RCMP’s Investigative Support Team and arson investigators are taking conduct of the investigation and will be working to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire.

Cpl. Kalanj says arson investigators have determined the cause of the fire is not believed to be suspicious in nature.

The investigation has been turned over to the BC Coroners Service.

The victim has now been identified as a 33-year-old Burnaby woman.

“We offer our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends,” Cpl. Kalanj said.
