Residents invited to tour historic Chinatown in downtown Chilliwack

CHILLIWACK — A local nonprofit is looking to share a piece of Chilliwack history with a free, upcoming set of events downtown.
This weekend, Heritage Chilliwack will be hosting “Uncovering Chinatown,” a series of guided tours accompanied by an event showcasing four new Chinatown Heritage plaques installed on or near former sites once owned and operated by early Chinese-Canadians in Chilliwack’s Chinatown North.
“While Chinatown North is no longer visible in Downtown Chilliwack, the stories of the people, families, and businesses who were part of it remain an important piece of our community’s history,” said Tourism Chilliwack.
The plaques result from roughly three years of research and planning, marking the first phase of Heritage Chilliwack’s work to shed light on the city’s Chinese-Canadian history in the area now known as Downtown, including Yale Road, Wellington Avenue, and Mill Street.
