Surrey man convicted of second-degree murder for 2023 killing

SURREY — A man is set to spend life in prison for the death of Surrey local Robb Memory more than three years ago.

At 11:47 a.m. on August 27, 2023, Surrey RCMP responded to a suspicious death at a home in the area of 191 Street and 68 Avenue, and found a dead man with injuries consistent with a homicide.

The victim was then identified as 56-year-old Memory. Police found the suspect on scene and arrested him.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) worked with Surrey RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS), and the BC Coroners Service to investigate the circumstances around Memory’s death.

B.C. prosecutors laid one count of second-degree murder against Paul John Martin of Surrey on September 1, 2023. He was detained and has been in custody since then.

A trial on the incident began in New Westminster courts on March 23 this year and wrapped up on May 15.

Four months later, on September 18, the now 45-year-old Martin was found guilty of second-degree murder.

All murder convictions automatically carry a life sentence with parole ineligibility to be decided by the trial judge.

“The guilty verdict was the result of collaborative efforts between IHIT and our policing partners, and the work of Crown Counsel at BC Prosecution Service,” said Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT. “As we await sentencing, our thoughts are with Mr. Memory’s family and those who were impacted by this tragic incident.”
