Premier David Eby calls snap election, B.C. Conservatives fire back

After visiting the Lieutenant Governor, Eby outlined his plan to stand up to Trump, protect British Columbians, and build a stronger, more independent economy for the future.

His campaign platform will focus on the following:

Stand up firm against Donald Trump’s bullying, keep U.S. alcohol off the shelves until we get a fair deal for forest workers, support Canada’s counter measures, and choose Canadian goods wherever possible.
Support workers and businesses facing tariffs, keep costs down for families and strengthen the health care and public services British Columbians rely on more than ever during a trade war.
Build an economy free from the US, work with the Prime Minister to open new markets, build the infrastructure and homes B.C. needs, and grow industries while training British Columbians so they are first in line for skilled trades jobs with bigger paycheques.

In a statement released Tuesday afternoon, the B.C. Conservative Party described the election as a cynical ploy.

“This cynical election is not what British Columbians asked for, but it offers our province the hope for real change,” the B.C. Conservative Party said. “That is why our team has come together, strong and unified, to bring overdue change and build British Columbia back up into the province that you deserve. Lorne Doerkson and Peter Milobar have come together to give British Columbians a viable governing alternative to the NDP chaos.”

It said the NDP under David Eby has increased the cost of living in British Columbia.

“Eby and the NDP have raised taxes, made you poorer, done nothing to fix the real problems of crime, drugs, and disorder in our streets, and the cost of living crisis,” the B.C. Conservatives said. “They blew through the Horgan surplus and are now running a deficit so large that even the accounting errors are counted in the billions of dollars. Four more years of David Eby’s weak, divisive, and unpopular government would be a disaster. At a time when BC and Canada are facing a war to weaken and break us from Donald Trump, we need a government that is strong, unified, and willing to fight for our province. Under the BC NDP government, our trade reliance on the USA has increased. Their failure to grow and diversify trade has left us more vulnerable to the current trade war.

For their party, the B.C. NDP said it will roll out details of the plan to respond to the trade war over the campaign, offering what it calls a “clear choice” for British Columbians.

“Our plan is making a difference, driving down housing costs and creating good new jobs. But the job is far from done, and we need to keep going,” said Eby. “At a time when Donald Trump is creating more uncertainty, the last thing we need is to rip up what’s working. British Columbians deserve the chance to choose whether we build on our progress or put B.C. at risk by rolling over for Donald Trump.”
