More candidates step forward to run for office in Chilliwack, Hope
CHILLIWACK/HOPE – As the filing period enters its final days, more candidates have stepped forward to run for public office in Chilliwack and Hope.
One of those candidates is Brooke Bouwsema-Cardinal, who announced her candidacy for Chilliwack school board over the Labour Day weekend. She describes herself as a former youth in care who knows what it’s like to carry more than a backpack into school.
“I also know how much it can change things when someone sees what you’re capable of and helps you find another way forward,” Bouwsema-Cardinal said. “I want to help build a school system where every student can find their place, build on who they are, and leave knowing they have something meaningful to contribute.”
Bouwsema-Cardinal was raised in both Alberta and Chilliwack with Cree, Dutch, and inter-Indigenous teachings, and plans to advocate for more vocational and leadership opportunities for SD33 students, according to the text of a campaign website.
