Taxi impounded for excessive speed – with passenger who lost their own vehicle due to excessive speed

SEA TO SKY HIGHWAY – A taxi driver from Squamish had their Toyota Corolla towed over the Labour Day weekend for excessive speed on the Sea to Sky Highway, ironically while they were transporting a passenger in the back seat who just lost their vehicle to an excessive speed impound.

BC Highway Patrol spokesperson Sgt. Michael McLaughlin says a BCHP motorcycle operator clocked a Toyota Corolla taxi at 133 km/h in a posted 80 zone on Monday, Sept. 7 at 11 a.m., on Highway 99 near Porteau Cove, B.C.

Sgt. McLaughlin estimates the taxi driver’s lead foot will cost them over $2,000.

“Professional drivers do not get a pass to disobey the law. They are expected to know better,” Sgt. McLaughlin said. “Passengers also have every right to politely ask their drivers to obey the law. If you’re not comfortable with a taxi or ride-share driver speeding or driving distracted, say something.”
