Longtime Chilliwack farmer, 3-term councillor to seek re-election

CHILLIWACK – Lifelong Chilliwack resident and local dairy farmer Chris Kloot has announced he’ll seek re-election in this fall’s municipal election on a platform of responsible growth and agricultural land protection.

On a campaign theme of “Building Tomorrow, Together,” Kloot says his platform is predicated upon eight key foundational pillars that reflect a balanced vision for Chilliwack’s future. He campaign will focus on thoughtfully-planned growth that supports a thriving community, while protecting the qualities that make Chilliwack unique.

“Chilliwack has grown from a small community into a thriving city, but what makes us unique is that we haven’t lost the heart of a small town,” said Kloot, who was first elected in 2014 and milks 180 cows in east Chilliwack with his family. “We still know our neighbours, look out for one another, and come together when it matters. Our challenge, and our opportunity, is to grow without losing that close-knit community spirit that makes Chilliwack feel like home.”

For Kloot, responsible growth means building smarter rather than just building more development. Throughout his 12 years on council, he has worked collaboratively with local businesses and community organizations to support Chilliwack’s growth while preserving its character and values.

He takes a collaborative and respectful approach to leadership, and believes the best decisions come from listening. His commitment to bringing people together is reflected in both his work on council and his leadership across several key committees.

He has served on the city’s Public Safety Advisory Committee and the Affordable Housing Development Advisory Committee, while currently chairing both the Design Review Committee and the Agricultural and Rural Committee, and serving as vice-chair of the Transportation Advisory Committee, in addition to serving as the vice-chair of the Fraser Valley Regional District, which represents over 330,000 residents.

As a lifelong Chilliwack farmer, agriculture has always been at the heart of Kloot’s connection to Chilliwack and has shaped his approach to serving the community. He says responsible growth and farmland preservation must go hand in hand in creating new opportunities while protecting the agricultural land and rural character that have shaped Chilliwack for generations.

Looking ahead, Kloot remains passionate about agriculture preservation, thoughtful growth, strong infrastructure, and maintaining the qualities that make Chilliwack a great place to call home. By balancing growth with infrastructure and protecting Chilliwack’s strongest assets, Kloot believes the city of Chilliwack can continue to prosper while remaining true to its values.

“There is still important work ahead, and I’m excited about where Chilliwack is going. It would be an honour to continue serving this community as we build tomorrow, together,” said Kloot, who also works as a local realtor.
