LANGLEY — An off-duty Surrey police officer died following a self-inflicted injury at a gun range in Langley Wednesday, prompting the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C. to launch an investigation into the circumstances of the distress call.

According to a news release from the IIO Wednesday evening, information shared by the RCMP states that on Wednesday afternoon, police were attempting to locate a man reportedly in distress at a business in the 9900 block of 201 Street in Langley. The area in question is a largely industrial area and not a residential area of the city.

The man, who was identified as an off-duty member of the Surrey Police Service, sustained a serious injury that appears to have been self-inflicted while police were in the building, the IIO said. The man was subsequently pronounced deceased.

Pictures supplied by Curtis Kreklau of South Fraser News Service show several RCMP units gathered outside an industrial building where a gun range is located at 2-9938 201 Street.

The IIO has commenced an investigation, and initial investigative steps will seek to confirm what role, if any, police actions or inactions may have played in the death.

The IIO is asking any person with relevant information regarding the incident to please contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
