Business owner, Rotarian to run for Chilliwack City Council

He says his campaign priorities will focus on themes like conservative taxation, long-term infrastructure planning, thoughtful growth and practical, research-based decision-making at City Hall.

“Chilliwack is growing quickly, and the decisions we make now will shape this community for decades,” said Mumford. “I believe we can accommodate that growth while protecting what makes Chilliwack a great place to live. That requires planning ahead, being disciplined with taxpayers’ money and making decisions based on good information rather than short-term thinking.”

Diving deeper into his platform, Mumford says affordability and transportation remain paramount in Mumford’s approach to municipal decisions. With families and businesses continuing to face economic pressure, he contends City Hall needs to carefully scrutinize spending, consider the impact of additional taxation and ensure residents can reliably access employment and essential services.

“When fewer and fewer families can afford vehicles, we need to make sure they aren’t being priced out of employment opportunities because they can’t get to work,” said Mumford. “We also need to ensure seniors can reliably access essential services and amenities with as few transportation barriers as possible.”

He envisions walkable neighbourhoods that preserve and prioritize green space, while ensuring infrastructure keeps pace with population growth. He’s a steadfast believer that rapid growth requires long-term planning that takes into consideration not only housing, but also transportation networks, schools, recreation facilities and the other services needed to support a growing community like Chilliwack.

His years of volunteering with Chilliwack’s vulnerable population have also informed his views on regional accountability.

“Chilliwack has put significant effort into developing services and supports for vulnerable residents, and I am very proud of the work our city and community partners have done,” said Mumford. “But these challenges do not stop at municipal boundaries, and Chilliwack cannot be expected to carry a disproportionate share of the regional response. It is unfair to those seeking support, and it is unfair to Chilliwack taxpayers.”

When it comes to board governance and collaborating with fellow elected officials, Mumford says his experience serving on an often-divided Chilliwack Board of Education reinforced the importance of approaching public decisions without ideological assumptions and instead focusing on evidence, public input and the merits of each issue.

“I’m not interested in governing from the left or the right,” said Mumford. “I’m interested in what works. Good ideas don’t belong to one side of the political spectrum, and neither should good local government.”
