Police say it is a criminal offense to knowingly possess or use counterfeit money. Unfortunately, Businesses cannot be reimbursed even if they unknowingly accept it as legal tender.

“We want the public to be aware of this recent fraud trend so that they can take the necessary steps to protect themselves,” says Maple Ridge RCMP Frontline Sergeant Daniel Rettenbacher. “Local business owners are reminded to ensure staff are familiar with how to identify counterfeit currency and verify security features, as well as have proper protocols in place for handling cash. Customers are also advised to do their due diligence when accepting or depositing currency.”
