Abbotsford Police to step up enforcement efforts around illegal e-scooters, similar devices
ABBOTSFORD – Police in Abbotsford say they’re going to step up education and enforcement efforts around the use of electronic scooters and other similar devices which are currently banned throughout the city.
In a statement, Abbotsford PD Sgt. Paul Walker says traffic volumes on Abbotsford roadways are expected to increase next week as students prepare to return to the classroom. He’s reminding parents and youth that electronic scooters and electronic dirt bikes are not permitted on public roads, sidewalks, pathways and parks anywhere in Abbotsford. Their use is only permitted on private property.
“E-scooters can pose severe dangers and are becoming increasingly common in our community,” Sgt. Walker said. “In the event of a collision, they can lead to catastrophic injuries or worse.”
He says education and enforcement efforts are now underway to remind parents and kids that Abbotsford is not part of the Electric Kick Scooter Pilot Project in B.C. Riding one can result in a $109 fine. More specifically, residents can expect to see enforcement efforts stepped up at local parks and other places where these e-scooters are often seen in operation. Signage and posters have also been distributed around the city and at local schools to ensure the community is informed on the rules of the road with these devices.
