Evacuation orders lifted from Hells Gate to Alexandra Bridge

CHILLIWACK — Evacuation orders from Hells Gate south to Alexandra Bridge have been cancelled.

The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) rescinded the orders in Electoral Area A effective 10 a.m. Thursday August 27.

The orders, originally issued July 21, July 23 and August 1, covered properties in Hells Gate and properties south of Hells Gate to Alexandra Bridge.

The Brunswick Creek wildfire remains out of control, but BC Wildfire Service advises the risk to life and property has sufficiently subsided. Residents may return home if they choose.

Highway 1 in the Fraser Canyon has also fully reopened with single-lane alternating traffic for two kilometres at Alexandra Tunnel.

Between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily, a pilot vehicle will escort traffic through the area while BC Hydro crews operate. Motorists should expect delays of up to 30 minutes.

The highway could close again on short or no notice if fire behaviour changes. No stopping is permitted within active work and wildfire-affected areas.

The FVRD says residents returning home should consult its re-entry guide, which includes information on cleaning refrigerators and freezers, disposing of spoiled contents and food safety.

Property owners with private wells are reminded to have their wells tested before consuming the water.
