ABBOTSFORD — Abbotsford police have released the results of a disturbing commercial vehicle check that operated on last week in the region.

Over a six-hour period, law enforcement officials inspected 32 commercial vehicles. They discovered 88 violations that led to 19 commercial vehicles being taken off the road. The violations ranged from minor to major defects. A total of seven thousand dollars in fines was issued over the day.

Police say the most concerning inspection was of a dump truck found with five of its brakes significantly out of adjustment, and a front tire that had the metal cords exposed through the rubber.

“Road safety continues to be a priority for the AbbyPD Traffic Enforcement Unit and patrol officers,” said Inspector Crystal Jack of the Abbotsford Police. “Our officers continue to ensure that all vehicles travelling on Abbotsford roads are road-worthy and that drivers are licensed.”

15 ride-hailing vehicles and taxis were inspected. Officials say four notice and orders were issued, two violation tickets were handed out and one driver was arrested for driving while prohibited.

Inspector Jack also said, “enforcement is underway targeting high collision locations and areas our citizens (have) identified as a concern. Driving is a privilege, not a right, and with that comes much responsibility.”

The inspection was staged February 2 along the Sumas Way bypass from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Abbotsford police traffic enforcement unit conducted the commercial vehicle inspection with the support of the Burnaby, Coquitlam, and Richmond RCMP traffic units, Delta, New Westminster, & Vancouver Police traffic units, as well with assistance from the Commercial Vehicle Safety & Enforcement Unit (CVSE) & the Passenger Transportation Board (PTB).
