Police are also alerting residents to a different kind of thief in the area.

RCMP say a young bear is continuing to enter a campground in the Sunnyside area for food and other attractants.

“So far, no aggressive behaviour has been reported, and the bear appears to be opportunistically seeking easy access to food, or perhaps his lost pic-a-nic basket,” said the Upper Fraser Valley Regional RCMP.

“Officers spent time over the weekend educating campers about bear safety and the importance of properly securing attractants.”

Visitors are urged to store food, coolers and scented items in secure containers or vehicles when not in use as feeding wildlife, even unintentionally, can lead to dangerous situations for both people and animals.

Officers then spotted a man drinking a can of beer while sitting in the operator’s seat of a boat that same week.

When approached, the man told them that although he had been driving the vessel, the boat eventually began experiencing engine problems.

A breathalyzer test revealed the man’s alcohol levels were just below the legal limit. Mounties say he was “cooperative” and “understood the potential consequences of his actions”.

RCMP are reminding the public that impaired driving laws apply on water, too, and that impairment affects judgement and response times to changing conditions.

“Designate a sober operator before setting out on the water. The Seasonal Policing Team continues to conduct proactive patrols and enforce provincial and Criminal Code offences throughout the summer,” said RCMP.
