HOPE — It’s never a dull day for police in Hope as officers dealt with a well-being check gone awry and several other road woes in the detachment’s latest weekly snapshot.

During the week of August 10 to 16, officers were called for a wellness check on a woman walking along the side of Highway 1 near Popkum and found a parked vehicle in the area.

Police suspected it was related to the call and approached a man in the driver’s seat, who said he’d been bear-sprayed.

A woman, believed to be the subject of the welfare check, then came out of the vehicle and began “showing signs of intoxication” and became “increasingly aggressive” with police, which led to a physical altercation with the officer.

She was arrested for police obstruction and is set to appear in court at a later date.

The man was uninjured and treated for the bear mace.

Hope RCMP say the pair was “less than forthcoming” with details, so police aren’t really sure how the bear spray situation happened.

That week, an officer conducting proactive patrols also stopped an impaired driver from Burnaby whose vehicle was seen weaving in its lane on Old Hope Princeton Way.

A breath sample showed the driver’s alcohol levels were well below the legal limit, but the officer still observed signs of drug impairment and administered a roadside sobriety test.

The driver did poorly, resulting in a 24-hour driver’s licence suspension.

As the passenger left the car, police found and seized a “substantial” amount of drug paraphernalia for destruction. The vehicle was towed.

Another vehicle was towed when Mounties responded to a single-vehicle rollover eastbound on Highway 1, in which a car had flipped onto its roof.

“Evidence at the scene indicated the vehicle swerved from the passing lane, left the roadway, entered the ditch, and overturned,” said RCMP.

The driver and three passengers, including two children, were taken to hospital for treatment. The adult passenger sustained minor injuries.

Speed and driver error are believed to be factors in the collision. The driver had also received violation tickets for travelling without a valid driver’s licence.

Hope RCMP responded to 169 calls for service that week.
