ABBOTSFORD — The City of Abbotsford has announced a new transit exchange set to open near Highstreet Shopping Centre in just over two weeks.

Bus service to the exchange, located on Highstreet Access Road between Mt. Lehman Road and Cardinal Avenue, is scheduled to begin on September 6.

“Strengthening our transit network is key to linking residents and visitors to the great people and places that Abbotsford offers as the economic and cultural hub of the Fraser Valley,” said Abbotsford Mayor Ross Siemens. “We are grateful to the Province of BC for their investment and partnership.”

The $8.1 million project was partly funded by a $3.2 million provincial investment through BC Transit.

The exchange will open with five new bus bays serving both local and regional routes, including the Fraser Valley Express, as well as feature new transit shelters with benches, a multi-use pathway on the north side, improved street lighting and bike racks.

“As Abbotsford continues to grow, the opening of Highstreet Transit Exchange will help ensure people have access to reliable and convenient transit. This new exchange will improve transit for riders today while supporting future growth in the Fraser Valley,” said Transportation and Transit Minister Mike Farnworth.

Construction began in January this year. Work is still underway for features such as a sixth bus bay, a connection between the multi-use path and Mt. Lehman Road and landscaping.

The project is part of Abbotsford Council’s 2022-2026 Strategic Plan for vibrant commercial centres and a community connected through convenient and affordable movement.
