Canada Post suspends mail delivery in Chilliwack, issues yellow alerts for 3 area cities

CHILLIWACK – Canada Post has suspended mail delivery in Chilliwack today due to poor air quality as a result of regional wildfires, and warned that customers in Abbotsford, Mission and Hope might be delayed in getting their mail for similar reasons.

In a statement, Canada Post says it has issued a red alert for Chilliwack on Tuesday, August 4.

“Wildfires and poor air quality are affecting mail and parcel delivery in parts of British Columbia. Canada Post is putting emergency measures in place to best serve residents of these communities and keep them connected,” Canada Post said.

Chilliwack and Okanagan Lake were issued red alerts today, while 70 Mile House was issued a red alert last Monday, July 27. Similar alerts were issued for Clinton (Friday, July 24) and Boston Bar (July 16).

A red service alert means Canada Post and its employees are suspending delivery for the day and not sending delivery agents out or recalling them. This includes mail collection.

Abbotsford, Hope, and Mission were issued yellow service alerts today (August 4), meaning Canada Post personnel will do their best best to deliver today, but there may be delays. Delivery will resume once conditions improve and it’s safe to do so.

The Fraser Valley Regional District says a yellow Air Quality Warning has been issued for the Eastern Fraser Valley (Agassiz, Chilliwack, Hope) due to elevated fine particulate matter (small particles in the air that may impact health).
