Team says Winnipeg basketball star injured after assault by nightclub staffers

WINNIPEG — A star player with the Winnipeg Sea Bears basketball team was badly injured this past weekend after allegedly being attacked by security staff at a downtown nightclub, the team said on Tuesday.

The team said guard Teddy Allen is out of hospital but may need surgery and will miss Thursday’s playoff game against the Saskatoon Mamba.

“What we’ve seen and heard to date leads us to believe that Teddy was the victim of an assault at the hands of security at a downtown nightclub,” the team said in a social media post.

“No person should ever be subjected to the brutality of what happened to Teddy and we are counting on police to fully investigate and hold accountable those responsible for the assault.”

The Sea Bears described Allen’s injuries as “significant” but did not elaborate.

It said the team will continue to co-operate with police and have referred to officers, “information based on what has been provided to us from those on the scene.”

Winnipeg police would not confirm who was involved in the assault or what led up to it, only saying the investigation is ongoing.

Allen was hospitalized on Sunday following the team’s loss against the Vancouver Bandits, the team said in a post on the weekend.

The 28-year-old from Arizona leads the Canadian Elite Basketball League in scoring.
