HOPE — The District of Hope announced Friday (Jan. 20) that it has appointed a new fire chief.

The District of Hope wrote on Facebook that it has named Thomas Cameron, a volunteer firefighter of 15 years and current deputy fire chief, as its new fire chief.

Cameron, a resident of Hope, was previously appointed as full-time deputy chief in 2021.

“The District of Hope is proud to appoint Thomas Cameron as its new Fire Chief. Naturally, he will have the tasks of continuing the growth and modernization of our Fire Department and coordinating District Emergency Response,” the District of Hope reported on Facebook.

Cameron replaces Tom DeSorcy, whose last day as Hope’s fire chief was Thursday, January 19.

“Today is Tom DeSorcy’s last day as Hope’s Fire Chief and an employee of the District,” the District of Hope wrote on Facebook Thursday. “Tom’s work has spanned a few areas for the District, but he is obviously most remembered for setting up Hope’s amalgamated Fire Department and shepherding it through many challenges and leading many positive changes to it up to now. So after almost 23 years with the District, we thank him for his valuable and unwavering service and wish him all the best in retirement. He deserves all our thanks.”

The District of Hope Volunteer Fire Department was formally created in 1999 through the amalgamation of the Kawkawa Lake, Flood/Laidlaw/Silver Creek and Hope Fire Departments. The Hope Fire Department serves the municipality, with a population of approximately 6,686, and surrounding areas providing fire suppression and emergency response 24/7.

Hope’s three fire halls house various fire apparatus including three Engines, two Tenders, a CAFS Squad and Incident Support Unit. The department consists of a paid fire chief, deputy chief and volunteer/paid on-call firefighters.

Members train weekly on Thursday nights and new recruits are considered annually for basic training.
