MISSION – City officials in Mission say the temporary reception centre set up at a local rec centre in response to a fire at a homeless shelter will be closing tonight.

In a statement, the City of Mission says the emergency centre set up to support displaced residents of Haven in the Hollow will close Tuesday night at 8 p.m., as response efforts now transition to the agencies responsible for ongoing housing and support services.

The municipality says the temporary reception centre was put in place immediately following the weekend fire to provide a safe, temporary location for residents displaced by the emergency while response partners coordinated next steps.

The city says its role during emergencies is to support the immediate response and provide short-term assistance during the initial phase of an emergency. As the emergency response transitions into longer-term recovery, responsibility for housing and ongoing client supports shifts to the appropriate community service providers and provincial agencies.

Mayor Paul Horn is thanking the many individuals and organizations who responded following the fire and acknowledged the collaborative effort required over the past several days.

“From fighting the fire to finding safe temporary housing options for the people displaced, this has proven to be a challenging time, requiring hard work, commitment, compassion, cooperation, and creativity,” said Mayor Horn. “We want to thank everyone for their role in navigating us through these difficult times, from our firefighters and Emergency Support Services team to City staff, community organizations, and individuals who went above and beyond.”

Horn added that while the immediate emergency response is coming to an end, work will continue to support the community’s recovery.

“We are just beginning the work of restoring services. While this fire has created hardship, it also gives us an opportunity to learn and improve. The need in our community was already at a critical point, so we have been actively seeking more resources here, and we are now going to need to redouble those efforts. We expect our Leisure Centre to be back to full functionality very quickly. We have heard from people who have raised concerns, and we want the community to know that we have been working around the clock to find solutions.”

Questions regarding ongoing accommodation and support services should be directed to Mission Community Services Society.
