Inmate hospitalized after assault at Fraser Valley prison

MISSION – Correctional staff at a federal prison in the Fraser Valley say an inmate was hospitalized after an assault last week.

Correctional Service Canada says an inmate was assaulted last Saturday, June 20 in the medium-security unit at Mission Institution.

The male inmate was evaluated by staff members and transported to an outside hospital for medical treatment.

He has since returned to the institution.

The Mission detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the prison itself are presently investigating the incident.

The assailants have been identified, and CSC claims the appropriate actions have been taken.

The safety and security of institutions, their staff, and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

In order to implement best practices aimed at preventing these types of incident, CSC says it will review the circumstances of the incident and take what it considers to be “appropriate measures.”
