ABBOTSFORD – Police in Abbotsford say they have identified a person of interest in connection with an RV fire that occurred Tuesday morning at an Abbotsford homeless encampment just off Highway 1.

AbbyPD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker says police were called to a structure fire at the Whatcom Park & Ride lot at approximately 10:50 a.m. Tuesday (June 16) involving a travel trailer.

The park and ride lot doubles as a homeless encampment. It was the scene of a fatal shooting back on March 23, 2026.

No injuries were were reported in yesterday’s fire.

The fire is being treated as suspicious, Sgt. Walker says, and a person of interest has been pinpointed by police. However, that person’s name has not been released.

Abbotsford PD patrol officers are continuing the investigation in coordination with Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service.

Sgt. Walker says investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the fire or observed anything suspicious, and has not yet spoken with police, to come forward.

The fire produced clouds of thick black smoke in and around Highway 1 Tuesday morning.
