New program cuts down on avian flu in Fraser Valley poultry farms
ABBOTSFORD — The B.C. government is putting its eggs in one new technology basket to protect poultry flocks in the Fraser Valley.
Applications are now open for the provincial Novel Tools and Technologies program, a $2.5 million project that equips farmers with tools like air filters and UV light systems to combat avian flu, which can enter barns through air or water systems.
“Feedback from the first round of funding shows more than 80% of producers would recommend the technology to other poultry farmers,” said the Agriculture Ministry.
“Some farm owners credited the new technology as a key reason their birds weren’t infected with avian influenza during the recent high-risk season and said they were feeling confident with this new protection compared to previous years.”
