IHIT ID’s victim in gang-related shooting in Surrey as an 18-year-old male
SURREY – Homicide investigators have identified the victim of Sunday’s fatal gang-related shooting as an 18-year-old male in order to advance their investigation.
According to a statement from Integrated Homicide Investigation Team spokesperson Sgt. Freda Fong, Surrey Police Service (SPS) officers were called to a shooting near 138 Street and 62 Avenue Sunday, May 31 at approximately 12:22 a.m. Police located a man suffering from gunshot wounds inside a vehicle that had struck a utility pole. First responders attempted life-saving measures but the man died at the scene.
Approximately 25 minutes later, RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU) personnel received a report of a car fire in the 10600 block of Salisbury Drive, Surrey. A burnt white Toyota SUV was recovered and is believed to have been used in the shooting.
IHIT was subsequently deployed and assumed conduct of the investigation, working closely with SPS, SPOSU, the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS) and the BC Coroners Service. While the motivation behind the shooting is still under investigation, preliminary information reveals that this was a targeted incident related to gang activity.
