LANGLEY — New SkyTrain stations are well underway for residents south of the Fraser River.

The federal Housing, Infrastructure and Communities department has announced that all eight stations extending the Expo Line from King George Station in Surrey to Langley City Centre are now under construction.

“The Surrey Langley SkyTrain will transform the way people move around Metro Vancouver,” said Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson.

“Breaking ground on the last of eight stations is a huge step towards building vital and reliable public transit connections. Through collaboration, we are building the first rapid transit project south of the Fraser in 30 years.”

Foundation work has already been finished at six stations, with work ongoing at 152 Street Station and starting at Willowbrook Station.

Fleetwood and Green Timbers stations are now progressing above ground.

“It’s great to see construction advancing on rapid transit to Langley. The Surrey-Langley SkyTrain will provide vital connections for our residents to jobs, education, and services around the region,” said Township of Langley Mayor Eric Woodward.

The project also includes 14 kilometres of fully separated multi-use pathways and is aiming to build transit-oriented communities with opportunities for housing, health care, child care and more around each station.

B.C. is contributing $4.4 billion to the project, with Ottawa allotting $1.3 billion, making it the largest federal public transit investment in the province.

Service is expected to begin in late 2029.
