CHILLIWACK – The president of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms will speak at a forum in mid-May in Chilliwack.

John Carpay, the president and founder of the Calgary-based JCCF, is slated to speak at a “Rights & Freedoms” forum on Wednesday, May 13 from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at The Loft inside the Landing Sports Centre, 45530 Spadina Avenue, in Chilliwack.

The event is being hosted by Chilliwack North MLA Heather Maahs and moderated by Kyle Van Ruitenburg.

Carpay, the featured speaker, was born in the Netherlands and grew up in British Columbia, according to his bio on the JCCF website. He earned his B.A. in Political Science at Laval University in Quebec City, and his LL.B. from the University of Calgary. He is fluent in English, French and Dutch. He previously served as Alberta director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, which advocates for lower taxes, less waste and more responsive, accountable government.

Carpay was called to the Bar in 1999 and has been advocating for freedom and the rule of law in constitutional cases across Canada ever since.

“As the founder and president of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms, John has devoted his legal career to defending constitutional freedoms through litigation and education,” his bio stated. “He considers it a privilege to advocate for courageous and principled clients who take great risks – and make tremendous personal sacrifices – by resisting the unjust demands of intolerant government authorities.”

In 2010, Carpay received the Pyramid Award for Ideas and Public Policy in recognition of his work in constitutional advocacy, and his success in building up and managing a non-profit organization to defend citizens’ freedoms.
