AGASSIZ – A five-hectare wildfire that ignited over the weekend on the north side of the Harrison River near Agassiz is now under control, while a fire north of Hope remains out of control.

According to the BC Wildfire Service dashboard, an initial attack crew comprised of BCWS personnel teamed up with the Chehalis Fire Department to battle the five-hectare wildfire.

Bucketing operations were effective at cooling the fire and limiting its spread, BCWS said.

It was held at five hectares as of Saturday night.

As of Sunday night, it is now under control and estimated at two hectares in size.

The suspected cause was related to human activity, either by accident or intentionally.

Over in the Fraser Canyon, the Ferrabee fire is currently estimated at 36 hectares in size. It is still designated as out of control as of Sunday night at 9 p.m.

As of Sunday evening, BCWS says the fire remains highly visible from Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon. There are two unit crews, one initial attack crew, three officers, four helicopters, and a water tender assigned. Minimal growth occurred overnight, and fire behaviour is mainly Rank 1 (smouldering ground fire with no open flame) to Rank 2 (low vigour surface fire with open flame).

“Much of this fire is burning in steep terrain which is inoperable for ground crews – crews are continuing to work on creating access,” BCWS wrote. “Bucketing helicopters are supporting ground crews. Periodic lane closures are possible due to crews and equipment working along Highway 1 . There is a risk of falling debris and drivers are asked to use caution when passing through the area.”
