Cultus Lake Park to increase hourly parking fees in 2023 to offset increased costs

CULTUS LAKE — Cultus Lake Park will increase what it calls its “high-season” weekday hourly parking rate from $4 an hour to $5 an hour, according to budget documents from the November 23 board meeting package.

The parking fee increase does not apply to any provincial parking areas around Cultus Lake, but rather parking lots governed by the Cultus Lake Park Board near main beach.

Park Board chair Kirk Dzaman confirmed the parking rate increase in a text message to Fraser Valley Today on Friday morning (Dec. 16).

Park Board CAO Joe Lamb indicated in an email Friday that once the proposed 2023 budget is given a final reading, the parking fee increase will take effect as indicated in the November 23 board meeting package.

Parking rates will increase from the current rate of $4 per hour to $5 an hour during high-season, which presumably refers to summertime when Cultus Lake attracts hundreds of thousands of people from the Lower Mainland, the rest of B.C., and beyond provincial boundaries.

Cultus Lake will continue to charge a $1 infrastructure charge per transaction to visitors of the park, which is clearly indicated on parking meters.

Staff are also proposing to continue to only offer visitors the ability to pay for parking by the hour through the elimination of daily parking rates, with the exception of Lot D, a staff report from CFO Erica Lee indicated.

In a budget document prepared by CFO Erica Lee, the park board will also increase seasonal camping site rates and other miscellaneous fees at Sunnyside Campground by 7.2 per cent to account for inflation, and continue to assess an infrastructure charge for seasonal and overnight campers.
