Chilliwack Fire urges safety reminder after battery-related fire in detached garage

CHILLIWACK — Firefighters have tackled a smoking shed in Chilliwack early Friday morning (Apr. 4).

At roughly 3:35 a.m., crews from Halls 1 and 4, as well as RCMP, responded to reports of smoke coming from the property in the 8800 block of Elm Drive, but found no active smoke or flames when they arrived.

Further investigation showed post-fire damage to a battery-powered e-bike that had been taken to the yard before the fire department arrived. 

Crews put out any remaining hot spots associated with the fire and confirmed no ongoing risk to the property.

The Chilliwack Fire Department said the occupants quickly removing the e-bike helped prevent the fire from spreading to the building.

There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters, and the fire is still under investigation to determine its exact cause.

Assistant Fire Chief Krista Minar added that crews have been seeing an increase in incidents involving lithium-ion batteries.

“Lithium-ion batteries are increasingly common in everyday items such as e-bikes and scooters,” said Minar. “While generally safe, they can pose a significant fire risk if damaged, improperly charged, or used with incompatible equipment.”

Officials are now urging residents to take precautions, such as using only manufacturer-approved batteries and chargers, not charging batteries near exits or in areas that could block escape, and keeping batteries away from combustibles.

“Early recognition and quick action are critical in preventing fire spread and reducing risk to occupants. Working smoke alarms save lives.”
