MISSION — A number of Mission residents may have lost power after a speeding driver knocked a power pole into the street last Friday (Mar. 20), according to Mission RCMP’s latest Community Connection.

Mission RCMP say a blue 2007 Pontiac G6 crashed into the pole in the area of Stave Lake Street and Knight Avenue at around 2:15 a.m. that day.

A witness reported seeing several young adults fleeing the scene after the crash, and officers then discovered that a 20-year-old man was driving the vehicle with two teenage girls inside.

He has received tickets for failing to remain at the scene of a collision and for speeding under the conditions.

Police are urging motorists to stay in their vehicles in the event of a power pole crash or when electrical wires are compromised, as the incident could expose occupants to “deadly” electrical shock.

RCMP responded to another collision on North Railway Avenue the next day, at around 12:50 p.m., when a grey GMC Yukon crashed into a fence and continued to spin its tires.

The 63-year-old man driving the vehicle was taken to hospital as a result of an apparent medical emergency, which is believed to have caused the incident.

The man had a dog in the vehicle that had been turned over to the SPCA in the meantime.

Earlier that day, at 2:20 a.m., officers responded to a report of a car fire near the Nelson Street and Gill Avenue intersection and found a white 2021 Hyundai Elantra burning at the scene.

The sedan was confirmed stolen from Surrey the day before.

Anyone with information about the vehicle is urged to call Mission RCMP at 604-826-7161 and quote file number 26-3526.
