ABBOTSFORD — A 69-year-old man is dead after a late-night shooting at an Abbotsford park-and-ride lot that is home to a large homeless encampment.

Abbotsford Police say they received a call reporting shots being fired at the Whatcom Road Park and Ride at 11:11 p.m. on Monday (March 23). Officers found a man suffering from serious, life-threatening injuries.

The victim was a resident of the homeless encampment. He was taken to the hospital but couldn’t overcome his wounds and died. His name has not been released.

The investigation is considered to be in its early stages. Additional resources have been assigned to determine the circumstances around what police suggest was a targeted event. However police do not believe the incident is related to gang activity or extortion. No arrests had been made.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is taking over the investigation lead with support from the Abbotsford Police Department’s Major Crime Unit. The Forensic Identification Service and the BC Coroners Services are also involved.

“The swift response from AbbyPD was integral in securing the crime scene,” says Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT. “Crime scenes such as this one can be complex due to the outdoor component and exposure to the elements. You can expect investigators in the area for some time speaking with witnesses and searching the area.”

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact IHIT at 1 877 551-4448.
