RCMP tackle fraud, grocery store thefts in Mission

MISSION — Money may not grow on trees, but a few suspects were determined to harvest it from other Mission residents regardless, according to the RCMP’s latest weekly round-up.

On March 2, a local organization called the police to report fraud after its accountant received an email in early February that appeared to be from an employee requesting a change to their direct deposit information.

Weeks later, the employee said he had not received his last two paycheques.

“Businesses are encouraged to take steps to verify that any emails requesting changes in direct deposit accounts or payment methods are in fact authentic, as fraudsters can easily make emails appear to be from a genuine employee or client,” urged Mission RCMP.

The fraud investigation is ongoing.

The following week, on March 9, officers arrested a 37-year-old woman who had reportedly shoplifted from a grocery store multiple times over the past month, at least twice from a pharmacy, and threatened to kill a Loss Prevention Officer and a police officer.

She had also breached her conditions. Mission RCMP has recommended to courts that she not be released from custody.

A grocery store was also featured in another case involving theft in the past week.

A witness at a store along London Avenue called police after seeing a man with a face mask leaving the store’s side door while pushing a cart of stolen items.

The witness stayed on the phone while describing the man’s movements before an officer with the Canadian Pacific Kansas City Police Service spotted the suspect heading into the nearby grocery store.

The officer proceeded to arrest the suspect after he was seen quickly changing clothes and trying to leave.

He was turned over to Mission RCMP for theft and was found to have an outstanding warrant for a previous crime in Vancouver.

The suspect was held in custody for a bail hearing.
