High streamflow advisory issued for Lower Fraser ahead of rainy week

CHILLIWACK — The BC River Forecast Centre is issuing caution on river levels ahead of forecast rain in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley for most of the upcoming week.

A high streamflow advisory is in place for the Lower Fraser and its tributaries along the Fraser Valley.

A strong atmospheric river is set to impact B.C.’s south coast starting mid-day on Sunday, bringing between 60 and 120 millimetres of rain to the region.

Flows are expected to rise locally due to both heavy rainfall and rain-on-snow runoff. Peak levels are possible early to mid-next week, depending on the system’s timing and intensity.

Environment and Climate Change Canada says the heaviest rainfall is due for Monday and Tuesday.

Motorists are urged to take precautions behind the wheel by driving to conditions and watching for hazards hidden under shallow water.

“Rain can challenge even the best drivers,” said Trace Acres, program director for Road Safety at Work. “It’s easy to get complacent about it because we see so much rain. But every trip on a wet road puts drivers and their passengers at risk.”

Freezing levels may rise on Sunday night and reach up to 3000 metres on Monday morning.

The weather agency says rain will likely ease by Wednesday afternoon.
