Missing man

First responders search for missing man approximately 37 kms up Chilliwack Lake Road: RCMP

CHILLIWACK — A spokesperson for the Chilliwack RCMP detachment says first responders have been searching for a missing man for at least two days now after he was reported missing in the Chilliwack River Valley.

According to a statement from RCMP spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener, Chilliwack Mounties have been working with Chilliwack Search and Rescue personnel 37 kilometres up Chilliwack Lake Road to search for a man reported missing by his family.

As of Sunday morning, Corporal Kiener says the man is believed to have travelled to the area on Thursday night and has not been heard from since.

The man was last seen by his family on Thursday night, March 5.

No further details were released by police, including his age, what he was last seen wearing and an overall description of him.

Chilliwack River Valley resident Derrick Kramer told Fraser Valley Today Saturday night and Sunday afternoon that he has spoken to first responders as it relates to the missing man because he lives very close to the area in question where police and search teams have been diligently working.

Kramer provided Fraser Valley Today with pictures showing Chilliwack SAR members and Chilliwack RCMP vehicles searching an area just off Chilliwack Lake Road.

An online group chat of Chilliwack River Valley residents shows they first became aware of SAR activity in the area on Thursday night, alluding to what Corporal Kiener said. The group chat revealed there were four SAR vehicles stationed near a gate to a lagoon Thursday night.

Kramer says RCMP members have asked him to post in a local Chilliwack River Valley chat group and ask his local community members if they heard any loud explosions or gunshots.

“I have posted that in our group chat in our community and nobody has heard a loud bang or a gunshot yesterday or today,” said Kramer, who’s well versed with the trails and backcountry south of Chilliwack Lake Road.

Kramer said he chatted with SAR members and learned that search and rescue volunteers have covered an extensive area from Paulsen Road to the fish enhancement facility. They set up a command centre just off Chilliwack Lake Road Sunday.

Based on what first responders have told him, Kramer believes the missing man has a black jacket and ball cap. As of Sunday afternoon at approximately 4 p.m., Kramer said an RCMP officer told him that the missing man had not yet been located.
