AGASSIZ – B.C.’s independent watchdog has cleared police of any wrongdoing after concluding its investigation into an officer-involved shooting in Agassiz in June 2025.

According to a statement from the Independent Investigations Office of B.C., RCMP officers were called to a home on Highway 9 between McDonald Road and Bristol Drive in Agassiz on June 19, 2025, at approximately 7:45 p.m. Police attended the home in response to a call about a person damaging a home.

Officers arrived to find an affected person and a woman with a handgun, who reportedly pointed a gun at police before going into the home.

The woman allegedly pointed the gun again and shot outside. Officers returned fire, which hit her, and then went back inside the home.

Members of the Integrated Emergency Response Team arrived to arrest a woman, and BCEHS took her in for assessment and treatment. One ambulance with primary care paramedics, one ambulance with advanced care paramedics and an air ambulance with critical care paramedics responded to the scene.

“Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to one patient who was transported to hospital via air ambulance in serious condition,” said Paramedic Public Information Officer Brian Twaites.

The IIO was notified shortly after the incident and began an investigation.

The IIO’s chief civilian director has reviewed the evidence collected by IIO investigators – including medical records, police reports and witness accounts – and has determined that there are no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer may have committed an offence.

The IIO says its investigation is now concluded, and a public report will be released following conclusion of a related court process.
