Man with knife apprehended amid heavy police presence in Abbotsford

ABBOTSFORD – Police in Abbotsford say they were able to resolve a situation in which a man experiencing psychosis was observed carrying a large knife attached to a pole Tuesday afternoon.

According to a statement from the AbbyPD, a significant police presence was observed in the area of Blueridge Drive and Townline Road in Abbotsford at approximately 3:30 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 27).

Police say officers responded after an alert citizen reported seeing a man walking in the neighbourhood carrying a large knife attached to a pole. Officers swiftly located the individual and safely apprehended him under the Mental Health Act, as he was experiencing a state of psychosis.

No injuries were reported to the man or any peace officers.

“AbbyPD frontline officers respond to thousands of mental health related calls each year, and yesterday’s incident is a reminder of the important role community members play in reporting suspicious and concerning behaviour,” AbbyPD wrote in a statement.
