ABBOTSFORD – Police in Abbotsford say a male suspect was taken into custody over the weekend after he allegedly became combative toward police during a traffic stop.

According to a statement from the Abbotsford Police Department, police were engaged in routine activities Friday evening when they initiated a traffic stop for erratic driving. Police say a passenger in the vehicle became “assaultive” toward police as officers tried to detain him.

During the physical struggle with police, the passenger attempted to reach for a knife that was allegedly concealed in his waistband.

The male suspect was taken into custody and is now facing criminal charges.

Abbotsford PD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker told Fraser Valley Today that the accused is Paul Robert Flanders. He faces a charge of willfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and carrying a weapon or prohibited device/ammo concealed. Flanders has a lengthy list of charges in the Court Services Online provincial database.

In addition to this incident, AbbyPD officers arrested three individuals over the weekend on outstanding warrants, located two impaired drivers, and completed several other traffic related enforcement actions.

On Saturday, dayshift officers located an occupied stolen vehicle parked at Albert Dyck Park. Both occupants were arrested without incident and are now facing criminal charges.

Abbotsford PD frontline officers responded to 301 calls for service between Friday evening and Monday morning.
