CHILLIWACK — The job of slowly but surely revitalizing downtown Chilliwack is a long, arduous one, but it’s one that BIA Executive Director Trevor McDonald and his board of directors are always cognizant of.

Earlier this month, McDonald revealed in his monthly newsletter to downtown merchants that there are plans afoot to vastly improve street lighting within the jurisdiction of the Downtown Chilliwack Business Improvement Association.

“Mayor Ken Popove, President John Schulstad and Vice-President David Blaich and I walked the DCBIA last week after hours to scope out badly lit areas within our area,” McDonald wrote. “We found some definite areas of concern and we will begin the process of lighting these areas in the next few months in conjunction with the city and our building owners and merchants. “

McDonald said the enhanced lighting will help curb ongoing vandalism concerns.

“Lighting improvements will greatly improve improve our fight against vandalism,” McDonald wrote in his email newsletter. “Big thanks to our City staff working on the year-round lighting up the bases of trees in our area. After last year’s wind and snow, the city thought it best to install along the base to avoid major damage to the lighting.”

The BIA is also working with the City of Chilliwack and a sustainability consultant on a pilot program to install 30 cigarette butt receptacles in the downtown area. The receptacles will be monitored by BIA street cleaning staff and the waste will be sent to recycling.
