BURNABY — Small plays here and there at just the right time paid off in a big way for the G.W. Graham JV Grizzlies football team on Thursday.

G.W. parlayed a 28-point second half performance and several critical defensive plays into a 44-37 playoff win over St. Thomas More in Burnaby.

The victory advances the Grizzlies to face the Vancouver College Fighting Irish this Thursday, Nov. 17. Kick-off is 1 p.m. at O’Hagan Field in Vancouver.

G.W. Graham stepped up big time on defence by holding St. Thomas without a first down in the first half until their very last drive of the half. Meanwhile, the offence was just getting cranked up for the day.

Quarterback Michael Blair anchored the offence with a touchdown toss to running back Denver Adam, and Blair ran one into the end zone to account for one of two TDs in the first half. Ayden Radke’s field goal and a point-after-attempt rounded out the 16-point effort in the first half.

The scoring opened up in the second half thanks to another TD run from Denver Adam, and running back Noah Johnson added a touchdown on the ground. QB Rylan Parks entered the game in the fourth quarter and added 2 TD passes, one to WR Charlie Larson and then Johnson got his second of the game. Offensive Coordinator Terrell Sparvier integrated a well-balanced game, using all of the weapons available to him.

The Grizzlies defence stepped up at the right time, getting an interception from Larson, a fumble recovery by LB Tyson Jones, and a sack by DE Evan Tiessen. Both Jones and Tiessen added 3 tackles as well, while strong safety Logan Murphy got an important tackle for loss at the right time in the game.

Defensive coordinator Ian Parks said he was pleased again to get more than 30 players on the defence, developing the younger players, and keeping the more experienced players healthy for this week’s big rematch with Vancouver College.

JV head coach Matt Greenfield said, “We knew we had a group that could get it done at this level. We have known it all year. Heading into the top 8 in the province is just another step in the process, one we are all looking forward to.”

The varsity Grizzlies will host the South Delta Sun Devils in their playoff opener this Friday, November 18 at Exhibition Stadium at 7 p.m.
